These past 12 months have seen massive changes to the world we live in, and probably to the way things will be for the foreseeable future. Frustrating as this is for all of us, fingers crossed there is light at the end of the tunnel for all of us.
Prior to the Pandemic, we made the commitment to invest in the Braes FOR THE LONG TERM! And despite the effects of the Pandemic, we have continued to honour that commitment both on the course and in the clubhouse, with more to come.
On the face of it, most people will see the tangible stuff, like new machinery, new furniture, new kitchen, new pro-shop etc. But underlying all of that, there is a much more fundamental investment…in our people themselves! In 2020, we recruited Jamie and Dean as apprentices and we are pleased to have done this as a commitment to ‘growing our own’. In the current climate, there is not enough investment in the youth sector and Jamie and Dean just needed that opportunity.
Managing and leading them, and the rest of the team at The Braes, is Daniel McLuckie. Most of you will already know Dan, who joined us during the first lockdown and willingly turned his hand to anything that needed doing, whether that be creating the Devilish new bunkers on the course, or putting up new ceilings in the kitchen, cutting the grass or renewing memberships, selling golf balls or pulling pints. A great ‘can do’ attitude and tremendous all-rounder.
We are delighted to be able to formalise Dan’s role as the new, full time Manager of Braes Golf Centre, a role he has grown into in double quick time! To support Dan in his development and knowledge, he has recently finished a one week Management Development Course run by Club Managers Association of Europe. Not only has it provided Dan with a great overview of the many aspects on running a golf and leisure business, but as importantly it has introduced him to a network of others in the same industry. A network, many of which are based at top class clubs and resorts across the World, and a network which is now aware of The Braes! And whilst the similarities between the Braes and Sunningdale may not be obvious to everyone, there are so many common denominators. Not least of which is finding and developing good people, and striving to provide better service. To this end, we were delighted to support Dan on the first part of what will hopefully be a long and fruitful career. See what Dan has to say about it for himself, below:
“MDP 1 was a fantastic experience, learning and networking with great people that I would have never had the chance to meet. Now, myself and Braes Golf have a fantastic network of likeminded people from some top courses in England, Ireland, Sweden, Dubai and Saudi Arabia. On the course we received some great insights in to all things club management from leadership to food and beverage management. All of the speakers were very passionate and gave a great understanding into all aspects of club management.”
Our last General Manager, Richard McLuckie, pointed out this development program so I decided to start on this route of education to give me the best opportunity to follow a career in golf and to contribute to the success of Braes Golf Centre. What we have achieved here at the Braes in a small period of time has been amazing but there is so much more ahead and the Management Development Program will be invaluable for helping me to provide the best service to The Braes and its Members.”
